As Google moves into becoming a world provider for cloud storage, there are a lot of things that the company needs to consider. As a technology powerhouse that’s already proved their abilities when it comes to serving people’s needs, there’s not much that Google can’t handle. That being said, the amount of data that internet users are storing in a cloud, is one of the more difficult tasks that companies like Google are being faced with. Though, Google has a solution, which is to ultimately add more cloud storage centers. This is something that Google is vowing to do within the next few years. But, what does it mean for the company? An interview with Google VP Joseph Kava has let the public in on some details.
1. Hiring New Staff
Before Google could take on it’s mission of being a big player in the cloud market, it needed to first hire the right people. As many of us already know, Google is supposedly one of the best companies to work for. In order to help Google with this new initiative, the company hired Diane Greene, who is the founder of VMware, a company that specializes in providing cloud and virtualization services. If there’s anyone that could handle a job this big, it’s definitely her.
2. Money and Investments
With a goal as big as this, Google has to put their money where their mouth is. They’ll need to make a few important financial investments, some which may be risky, in order to achieve what they are planning to do. Trying to become one of the top companies of cloud storage doesn’t come cheap. Google will need to put money down on infrastructure that can support this kind of data, which means new buildings, new equipment, new staff, and much, much more.
3. Location, Location, Location
In order to support a global cloud business, Google will need to build ten locations of data storage centers across the world. Previously, Google preferred to build these center in rather suburban or urban areas, in case they needed to add more buildings to the overall campus. However, due to the fact that the new cloud system will support data coming from populations that use it the most, these new data storage centers will therefore be strategically placed in global cities, like Tokyo.
4. Accessibility by Customers
With data usage growing each second, solely finding the right location for a data center isn’t enough. Google’s cloud has to be able to serve the amount of data that exists, while simultaneously serving the people that need to store their data, regardless of their home network’s location. Fortunately, no matter where you are in the world, Google will be sure to have presence in a data center in a region close to you. According to Kava, once you are on Google’s network, they can serve you from anywhere on the globe.
5. Sacrifice of Newer Products
Google knows better than most companies that technology keeps expanding more and more. Every year, a new device comes out that we could have never fathomed ten years ago. However, despite that Google’s main focus is currently on developing their cloud storage, that doesn’t mean they’ll be putting other ideas on the back burner. Though, Google feels that the ultimate Internet of Things still lies in people’s smartphones, regardless of what they will produce next. Therefore, it’s understandable that they are prioritizing their data center strategy at this moment.
Keep an eye on the developments to see how Google is progressing with this data strategy, and how it will impact you as a user now and in the future.
