With the emergence of cloud computing, the process of acquiring talent is no longer what it once was. The requirements are now different and because of that new skills are needed and will have to be developed. Many CIO’s in organizations are just beginning to recognize that they don’t need people to build servers but need them to manage those organizations who do.
It’s a completely different skill set as they no longer manage outcomes themselves but do so through others. The shift in roles requires developing new cloud capable talent for their departments in order to be more successful in the cloud.
The Cloud Has Made it all Different
The cloud has shifted everything and everyone in organizations to different skill sets now necessary to a host a variety of different vendor relationships to vastly different ways to deploy and set up services.
There’s a learning process that needs to happen internally where people need to know what they have. It’s also necessary to understand virtualization since that’s the nature of the cloud. Some new into the workforce have been trained in virtualization but they need to understand the business they will be supporting which can take some time.
The fact is that these days, many CIO’s see a transition away from the pure skills of coders and network managers to information brokers practitioners who will be counted on to figure out the critical information needed to make important business decisions.
Most believe it isn’t the same as positioning a data center architect and making them the cloud architect. People need to have a certain mindset for system integration for those cloud architect roles.
Support from Vendors can help
In many cases, vendors can help develop talent with the necessary skills required by helping to test, implement and train on various best-in-class solutions. Some CIO’s are now accelerating the training and development process by sending their employees to “intern” at other affiliated companies to learn about cloud technology and processes. It’s a win-win for both companies as stronger business relationships emerge as a result.
While many CIO’s are utilizing vendors as a way to fast track the development of must-have cloud skills, others are training employees on their own by holding technology days and incorporating job shadowing so IT personnel can spend time learning more about cloud technologies.
As the cloud becomes more prevalent and roles change, IT employees will need to adapt and learn new skills. The good news in all of this is that IT professionals are able to learn new technologies much faster than most.
